BACKGROUND:
Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ) is a multidisciplinary academic institute that promotes global peace and social justice through quality education, research, training and advocacy. CPJ is committed to identifying and promoting sustainable and inclusive solutions to a wide range of global concerns and issues, including fragility, conflict and violence.
The Feminist Judgement Project (FJP) is a pilot project focusing on rewriting and reimagining of 2-3 Bangladeshi judgments. This initiative, inspired by the various Feminist Judgment Projects around the world, aims to apply feminist perspectives to judicial decisions that can provide an inclusive approach to interpreting constitutional equality rights. A women legal practitioner or law academic (Senior Practitioner) will choose a case that they believe will benefit from a feminist analysis and work together with two other women researchers (Junior Practitioners) to produce a rewritten judgment. The rewriting entails applying feminist theory to the facts and laws as was in existence during the time of the judgment. To this end, CPJ is calling for applications for the position of junior practitioners from female law graduates having one year work experience or a postgraduate degree.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Conduct literature reviews to gather relevant information on the selected cases;
● Explore the factual basis of that particular timeline when the original judgment had been made;
● Review relevant laws of that contemporary time;
● Apply relevant feminist theories that align with the judgment re-writing;
● Analyse all relevant data gathered from the extensive literature review;
● Incorporate learnings from the workshops in rewriting exercise;
● Write the feminist interpretation of the judgments of selected cases using the feminist methodologies keeping the legal bindings of judgment writing unchanged.
DELIVERABLES:
The Junior Practitioner/Academic is expected to:
● Submit 1-2 re-written judgments (7000-10000 words) each using feminist-legal perspectives of the existing laws.
● Attend 2 workshops, one on judgment writing/rewriting and the other on feminist legal theories, details of which shall be notified later upon acceptance of the proposals.
● The working groups are expected to develop and share a 3-month work plan with CPJ that includes weekly work briefings.
● Present rewritten judgment/s in a seminar, design and date to be decided with CPJ.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
● A Bachelor’s Degree in Law.
