The Training of Trainers (ToTs) program for the capacity building of Paralegals started based on the recommendations of the participants of a consultation meeting organized in 2014 by South Asian Institute for Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (SAILS). It was decided to organize training of trainers, focusing on developing a cadre of senior trainers in the South Asian region and developing effective tools and methodologies to design holistic capacity building programs for paralegals. The idea was to have a pool of trainers who would undertake further trainings in their respective countries and offer training support to each other, and ultimately develop a network of paralegal master trainers in South Asia. This would further strengthen advocacy efforts and create a space for paralegals. Keeping this vision in mind SAILS organized 3 regional and 3 national ToTs;
The first regional ToT was conducted in Bangladesh in 2015 with 20 participants from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Myanmar.
The second regional ToT was conducted in Sri Lanka in 2016 with 21 participants from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
The third regional ToT was conducted in Islamabad, Pakistan in July 2016 with 21 participants from Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The national ToTs: first national ToT was conducted in Pokhara, Nepal with 26 participants and second & third were conducted in Ahmedabad and Odisha with 30 participants in March 2017
The lead trainers for all trainings were Mr. Gagan Sethi, founder and Chair of Centre for Social Justice, India, and Ms. Nupur Sinha, Executive Director of Centre for Social Justice.
