August 20, 2023 Centre for Peace and Justice

Center for Peace and Justice (CPJ), BRAC University hosted a thought-provoking talk on August 20, 2023, as part of its Research Seminar Series. The event featured an eminent scholar and esteemed professor, Dr. M. Emranul Haque, who holds the position of Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Manchester.

At the heart of the discussion was the exploration of the intricate connections between human capital, governance, and economic growth.  Dr. Haque discussed how, among other factors, human capital development, effective governance, and forward-looking economic policies contribute to a nation’s overall development.

In a broader context, the talk provided a platform to discuss several pertinent themes that have societal and global implications. The labour market, minority community issues, and the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic were topics that resonated with the audience. Dr. Haque’s insights prompted contemplation on various geopolitical matters, including the current economic scenario at the Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camps and international statements on refugee-related concerns.

Moreover, the talk touched on CPJ’s work encompassing faith and development, corruption, price hikes, governance, peace, youth engagement, and data collection. These diverse facets represent CPJ’s proactive approach to addressing a range of complex issues through various research-driven initiatives, including research reports, journal articles, op-eds, seminars, colloquiums, and roundtable discussions.

The talk concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. The attendees engaged directly with the scholar, seeking clarifications and posing thought-provoking questions. The talk opened up new avenues for CPJ to explore and it will be beneficial for CPJ as it looks forward to expanding its range of activities to meet its ultimate goal of promoting global peace and social justice through education, training, research and advocacy for a just, peaceful and inclusive society.
