Peace Cafe, BRAC University celebrated International Women’s Day on Monday, 13th March 2023 on “Embrace Equity” at BRAC University Auditorium. 

The event included a discussion session on minimising gender-based marginalisation and featured notable guests and speakers from various fields. The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage discourse on the challenges faced by women in different spheres of life, including their journey toward empowerment. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of gender equity and discuss the challenges yet to be overcome.

The session began with a recitation followed by an introduction to Peace Café and a video highlighting the journey of womanhood. 

Dr. David Dowland, the Registrar of BRAC University, delivered an impactful introduction speech, setting the tone for a thought-provoking discussion. The event’s panellists included actress, singer, model, and development worker Rafiath Rashid Mithila, corporate and commercial lawyer/managing partner Barrister Rashna Imam, and Miss World Bangladesh 2018, Jannatul Ferdous Oishee. Together, these luminaries engaged in a lively discussion, tackling the significance of International Women’s Day, past achievements, existing challenges, and, most importantly, strategies to minimise gender-based marginalisation in the future. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of continued efforts toward gender equality and the critical role that individuals from all walks of life play in achieving this goal.

The discussion was moderated by Sayma Sarker Shetu, general secretary of Peace Café, Brac University, who facilitated a thought-provoking conversation on women’s empowerment. The speakers shared their experiences and insights on gender-based discrimination, social stereotypes, and the importance of education and awareness to overcome these challenges.

In her closing remarks, Tahsina Rahman emphasised the need for collective efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Nilufa Sultana Sheta, the Program Coordinator at CPJ, Brac University, thanked the distinguished guests, speakers, and attendees for their active participation and engagement.

The ceremony ended with a cultural event by Peace Café members that promises to be a fitting tribute to the spirit of International Women’s Day and the power of artistic expression to unite people. Attendees will undoubtedly leave with a deeper appreciation of the rich cultural heritage and diverse talents of the BRAC University community.
